Addiction Treatment Broward County
Holistic treatment is about more than just addiction and sobriety – it addresses the person’s life in its entirety – including career, physical, familial, and spiritual aspects.

Rather than focusing solely on addiction, the holistic aspect to treating our clients aims to treat a client’s “whole being.” Many people suffering with alcohol and drug addiction also have a dual diagnosis, or Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorder.” More than 50% of those living with dual diagnosis have not received any medical treatment or psychotherapeutic intervention to help them progress in their recovery.

Our addiction treatment is a blend of therapeutic activities that address many issues. A major part of this program is the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or “CBT” program. CBT emphasizes that behaviors and thoughts can be unlearned, specifically those unhealthy, problematic thoughts and behaviors that contribute to alcohol and drug addiction. These powerful, destructive thoughts are prevalent in people struggling with substance abuse; and that “all-or-nothing” thinking which contributes to their sense of powerlessness and lack of control over their addiction behavior.

CBT at Broward Recovery Center includes our Faith Based Program, led by an ordained minister who has an extensive understanding and experience in incorporating faith-based principles and traditions in support of a clients’ recovery process. Faith-based groups, individual and group therapy, faith-oriented studies and education, and introducing spiritual daily practice will strengthen the recovery process for our clients. We place the emphasis on learning healthier, more adaptive thoughts and behaviors through psycho-education, skills training, and cognitive restructuring.

In terms of a holistic approach to recovery, studies show that negative thinking is an obstacle to self-change. CBT has proven to be extremely effective as one of our research-based treatment modalities that is appropriate for all levels of care, because it focuses on examining the relationships between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. By exploring the patterns of thinking that lead to self-destructive actions (like drinking and drug abuse) and the beliefs that direct these thoughts, people with mental illnesses can modify their patterns of thinking to improve coping skills and reactions.

As part of an individualized treatment plan, Broward Recovery incorporates CBT with client therapies as a way to help them identify self-defeating thoughts and behaviors which may often drive addiction. During CBT (which is a type of psychotherapy that is different from traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy), the patient and therapist actively work together to help the patient recover from specific identified mental illness issues. People who seek CBT can expect a therapist to be problem-focused and goal-directed in addressing the challenging symptoms of mental illnesses. CBT is an active intervention technique for the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction, which means that our patients will be active participants in their own recovery, using written exercises and keeping thought records to help them better understand negative thinking – and to develop healthier thinking, which they can then incorporate into their lives.

Benefits of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) at Broward Recovery

It’s common for patients who are struggling with substance use disorder to have destructive, negative thinking. By not recognizing that these thought patterns are harmful, they seek treatment for depression or other external influences. Since cognition affects our wellbeing, changing harmful thought patterns is essential to the process of healthy recovery. CBT addresses harmful thought patterns, which help clients recognize their ability to practice alternative ways of thinking, and regulates their distressing emotions and harmful behavior.
